We see Jesus healing people throughout the Gospels—this is the origin of the Sacrament of the Sick. How this wonderful ritual turned into “last rites” and preparation for death is a lengthy and sad story. Thank God, the renewal of the sacraments has led to a recovery of this sacrament as a powerful way to pray for divine healing. When preparing for surgery, undergoing radiation or chemo, or otherwise in need of this healing touch of Christ, one can request to receive this prayer of the church before, during or after Mass. Our priests can also come to home or hospital. Just let us know of the need by calling the office. As we read in the Letter of James: “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.
